Investigation after Lapland passengers get no passport checks
15.12.10
An investigation has been launched after passengers returning from a trip to Lapland (Finland) were allowed to walk through Humberside Airport without going through passport control, the Hull Mail reports. The UK Border Agency (UKBA) is to examine why none of its staff were on hand to check the passports as the travellers returned from a day trip to visit Santa on Saturday evening.
A spokesperson for the UKBA told the newspaper: ‘We are aware of the incident at Humberside Airport on Saturday, in which a delayed flight from Finland was not met by UKBA officers. We are urgently investigating this matter. A number of passengers remained at the airport and passport checks were carried out. We have taken steps to check the remaining passengers retrospectively.'
It is normally the airline or airport's responsibility to warn the UKBA that a flight is expected. They will then ensure staff are in position to meet it. It looks like this did not happen after the one off charter flight was delayed.
