A suspected money launderer allegedly stashed cash in a bag on a trip to Bangkok, Lincolnshire Magistrates were told this week. The magistrates ordered the money be held for a further 3 months pending further Police enquiries.
Michael Dalton boarded a plane at Humberside Airport to Amsterdam en route to meet his wife Christine in the Far East on May 28. He told Customs & Excise officers that £10,000 found, in varying denominations, in a bag was intended to buy property in Thailand during a 28-day holiday. He was allowed to board the plane, but the money was seized.
Customs officer Kate Stainforth told the magistrates Dalton and his wife were stopped again at Humberside Airport on July 12 following their flight home from Bangkok. A further £5,000 was found in their possession and this cash was also seized by customs officers.
Magistrates in Scunthorpe ordered the retention of the cash for 3 more months under the Proceeds of Crime Act, pending further inquires. Humberside Police are continuing their inquiries into allegations of money laundering.
The Daltons, of Weelsby Avenue, Grimsby, are well-known in North Lincolnshire boxing circles. They are currently being held in custody in connection with alleged money laundering offences in connection with £100,700, said to be the proceeds of criminal activity committed by their son, Richard.
The couple are jointly charged with a 16-year-old girl and are due to appear at Hull Crown Court on December 12. Richard Dalton faces a charge of conspiracy to convert or transfer the proceeds of criminal conduct and / or drug trafficking.
